Why returning a general store to Orwell matters…
To provide groceries, prepared foods, and other essential items
To create a gathering space in the middle of the village for everyone
To create a cafe space and a venue for displaying local arts and crafts
To serve as a marketplace for local farms and producers
To offer youth and local residents employment opportunities
To preserves a historic landmark that has anchored Orwell village for generations.
The Plan
OSCT will purchase the building and complete renovations funded by grants and donations. The renovated store will be leased to an independent operator at a favorable rate contributing to financial sustainability.
Financial Model
It’s no secret that no one gets rich operating a small general store — the margins are tight and the competition is everywhere. But we believe that if a new store
starts with low overhead, and
offers enough reasons for folks to patronize the place (café, deli with great meat offerings, pizza, art, bakery goods, friendly, welcoming environment)
it can succeed.
There are examples across Vermont showing this is not a pipe dream. It will take hopes and dreams, but also money and hard work.
Reopening the Orwell General Store means restoring the heart of Orwell. It means a place to buy grocery essentials without a long drive, a café where neighbors gather, a gallery where local artists can share their work, and a marketplace for farmers to connect with customers.
